A calm sea enjoying freshness and warmth together favours the elaboration of wines with fresh fruit and long ripening.
The feeling that we belong to these lovely landscapes between the mountains of PRIORAT and the Mediterranean sea, convinced us to develop wines from these areas.
Melis Cellars
The unique identity of their lands, quality of Melis wines
Our project started in the rugged mountains of Priorat, in exceptional vineyards producing wines of extreme quality, character and personality, unique in the world.
The spirit of our project, CELLERS MELIS, brings together two concepts of wines, some produced in the heart of the PRIORAT and others close to the Mediterranean.
Our perception of the territory goes beyond the geographical and administrative limitation of a producing area. We conceive the idea of wines from the earth linked to a type of soil and strict climate in an atmosphere of oenological freedom, which represents the non-limitations of the master winemaker in any stage of the elaborating process, hence, resulting in a internationally recognized, ecological and diverse wines much too the delight of the most curious.

The Vineyard
Melis Estate (D.O.Q. Priorat)
The MELIS vineyard, of 7,5 Ha, is located within a 45 Ha. estate in Torroja del Priorat, “The Solana”. As its name indicates, it is a “sun exposed land” with a south-west orientation. It is located on a mountain slope of 30% between 250 and 400 meters of altitude. The estate is limited in the bottom by the Cortiella river valley that forms a ventilated passage for the “garbinada”, a humid and refreshing wind coming from the sea in the summer months.
The subsoil is 100% “licorella” slate rock , and it is covered with a thin layer of “licorella” sheets mixed with 20% clay.
The main vineyard was planted in the year 2000 on 10 km of terraces formed for this purpose. The varieties are: black Grenache, predominant in our wines, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.
At the top of the MELIS estate we find another 1.50 Ha vineyard planted with a 105 year old Carignan.
The ripening of the grapes of this “terroir” produces wines of an intense and complex fruit and very ripe tannins. The depth and freshness of its wines along with unique mineral notes prove to be one of the unique “terroirs” in the PRIORAT.
